30th March

Had a bit of a breakthrough towards my project today, Adrian mentioned looking at age and decaying as it was running theme in my images and maybe it was this idea of aging tension that i need to start looking at. Need to start drawing some more and really working these ideas out.

Got looking at these two images, the first image a recurve bow used by the mongols when they still used bows. What really made me intrested in this image is the unusual shape of it, the bends are really nice similar to the first part of this project for me and well its a bow, the bow only works because of tension it is basically tension in its raw form.

The second image is a picture i took a while ago, i got looking at it after speaking to adrian, i can really see the applied force in this image. As the chain goes across the deck so loose then as soon as it touchs that hook it becomes rigid, the change in a object by just introducing a hook. Without that hook there would be no loose section, it is what around the chain that defines the chain.

This was the last of the images i looked at, its a picture i took on my way home, i walk under this tree every single day ive been in Hereford and this was the first time i stopped and looked at it. I got staring at the lower branchs and how they had been pushed in and clipped so it didnt interfer with the road next to it, i just like the contrast between where man has applied force to the lower section and above that where it has been left to push out and be free. Like the chain the tree is shaped by man, it would not look like it does if not for man applying the force to it.

Got some real intresting ideas bubbling around in here, still have no ruddy clue what im gonna do for my final piece mind.

In other news today had a big talk with Kath over cultural studies, it was good to get a sense of things but because Simon wrote the breif i seem to be getting alot of maybes and i will have to ask Simon which isnt that helpful. I think my essay will be around the idea of caging nature in agansit in the past caging nature out.

I am officailly on hoilday now for three weeks so these posts wont be so frequent, its not because i dont love you learning journal its just for a few days im gonna be a person again and do a little living.

29th March

Good day today, better than yesterday by miles. Went into the forge today and my oracle was there Adrian i sat down with him and showed him the feedback and spoke to him and he just looked at me and said we arent leaving till this idea is done in your head and on paper, just something about that made me feel comfortable. We had like a 10 mintues talk where i would get more ideas then he sent me off to draw up ideas and think and come back, i must have done this for like easily an hour really trying to get what im looking clear.

What we came up with is that i wasnt portraying really well that the key issue i was looking at was this idea of applied force, it was what exicted me about my images, i just got so many ideas from just the words Applied Force. Im really hitting the ground running with this idea, ive got loads of stuff going round my head.

We got looking at what i could do with applied force, the options he said to me was

A springy force applied to a Unmoveable object
A soft force applied to a unmoveable object
Pushing force applied to unmoveable objects

And he did all that with just his finger and a desk.

Im gonna start looking at this idea of force, springy items under force such as springs and the items that build up that force.
Hard objects like power hammers pushing together and the power behind that force.

Got alot of research to do over these three weeks.

28th March

Well lets talk about the days event, bit of a weird day today found 5 pounds outside my house door and had a great energy in the forge but when i got to the HE center stuff started going little down. Had a meeting with Kate which didnt go well and got my feedback on the latest project, it was a 55% percent as Mel kept telling me is a good mark but i still wanted more for myself.

  • The main feedback i got was as follows
  • I wasnt drawing enough straight from my source materail, they liked the pictures i just need to maybe draw them to understand the shape.
  • Without being able to read my writing they had a lot of trouble sort of getting the intent of my work
  • The fields i was looking were a bit broad for them so they think it would be better to narrow it down towards this idea of Tension.
Theres the magic word for this next semseter Tension, got alot of expermenting to be done and little time but damn if i wont give it a try

First Post

I understand my writing is no where near the easy thing to read so i have decided to start blogging my learnign journal, the tech journal works great so thought id try this. This will be abit more personal i wont be promoting this about so could just me, Mel and Ambrose reading this, like a secret club some have called.

I will be trying to do a post every two days keep up with the days labours, i think once a day will be too much and well im a blacksmith we only think ever 48 hours =]
